How To Start A Successful Podcast And Make Money In 2021

Many people ask me how to start a successful podcast, and I always tell them that it’s not easy and it takes time. On today’s Black Entrepreneur Blueprint podcast episode # 355 I’m going to discuss how to start a successful, moneymaking podcast and what I would do differently if I was starting over. WHAT – what is a podcast (audio vs video)

WHY – you may want to start one (benefits)

  • Build a platform
  • Build authority in your niche
  • Create multiple revenue streams from the podcast
  • Create important relationships
  • Make money

PODCAST VS OTHER PLATFORMS – Three mediums (Video, Audio, written)

  • Podcast vs YouTube (video) – podcast is an intentional listen vs recommended listen, podcast listeners listen to more than 80% of the podcast vs YouTube where the attention span is less than 5 minutes, different type of listener, can consume your content while they are doing other things vs being a video content
  • Podcast vs Blog/Newsletter (written) – Podcasting is intentional and you can listen while you do other things, reading a blog is a singular focus action that can be good or bad. Many people don’t want to take the time to read unless they are interested in your topic, but they will listen sooner than read
  • Podcast vs Radio (audio) – the podcast is on-demand listening while terrestrial radio may involve flipping stations and moving from one station to another. Now radio shows do have streams

PROS VS CONS

Pros:

  • You can start a podcast with very little money
  • You get to personally connect with your audience (build a relationship and rapport)
  • You get to help people (if that’s what your podcast is designed to do)
  • Get to meet and interact with people you probably wouldn’t be able to with a podcast
  • People can consume your content while they are driving, walking, working out, even at work
  • You don’t need a million listeners, just a dialed-in audience for your niche
  • Can leverage your guests’ audience to build your audience

Cons:

  • It takes a commitment
  • Can be time-consuming
  • You must cut through the clutter and other podcasts
  • Must be able to provide quality content

DECIDING YOUR PODCAST-STYLE & TOPIC:

  • A topic or subject you enjoy or are passionate about
  • A topic or subject that aligns with your business and your business goals
  • A topic or subject that can be monetized
  • A topic or subject that other people have an interest in
  • Interview style podcast

TOOLS & COST

HOW TO GET LISTENERS (while you’re preparing your first few podcast episodes)

  • Build your database first using a newsletter (weekly or bi-weekly)
  • Aggregate content for your niche in your newsletter
  • Run ads in FB, IG and post on LinkedIn about your newsletter to build an audience
  • Announce your podcast in your newsletter and drop a link to subscribe
  • Run ads in FB, IG and post on LinkedIn about your PODCAST to build an audience
  • Use the synergies from the newsletter and podcast to build your audience (people receive info in different ways)
  • Are you going to do an interview-style podcast?
  • Are you going to do a solo show?
  • How long will your podcast be (Neil Patel and Billy Gene do daily podcasts that last like 5 minutes)
  • Are you going to give tips or actionable steps?
  • Etc, what does your audience want and how can you deliver that?

MONETIZATION

Podcast audience size is determined by how many downloads each episode receives on average over a 30 day period. CPM is the cost per mille or cost per 1,000 listeners. JUST FOR PODCAST (not pod & newsletter)

  • Podcast sponsorship/advertising – after you get some numbers
  • Revenues from affiliate products you talk about (software you use, etc)
  • Revenues from your own products/services (online courses, workshops, products, etc)
  • Newsletter monetization (sponsorships, ads, affiliate sales, your products, etc)
  • Newsletter content using feedspot.com to get content resources like blogs, websites, and info and pulling the content in your newsletter with www.rasa.io
  • MAKE MORE MONEY IF YOU SELL AD PACKAGES FOR PODCAST AND NEWSLETTER – podcast and newsletter rates can start from $250 per ad and up depending on your newsletter size
  • You’re selling apples to oranges, not apples to apples so you can get more money for your ads
